Memorial Day Weekend!

With a little extra time in our weekend, we decided to pack up the minivan and head down to Dallas, Texas! We hadn't had a family trip south of the Red River before, so this trip was a first for us. We stopped over and visited some friends on Friday night (John & Jennifer Day), and had a wonderful evening. Then we continued on to get settled in at our hotel in Arlington. The next morning we went to Six Flags over Texas! It was a great time, and we had a blast! We went back to the hotel and settled in by the pool for a nice evening. Katie and Kassie swam until late into the night... it was very nice as they also showed a movie outside - so the chance to watch a movie and swim was something new! Katie and Kassie made some friends while there who also happened to be from Oklahoma. As it turns out there was a little thing going on in Arlington called the Big 12 Baseball conference championship - and all the teams also seemed to be staying in our hotel, including the eventual OSU Big 12 champs! So there were a number of OSU fans and families as well. On Sunday we had breakfast with Katie & Kassie's new friends - Katherine and Jonathon... and Susan and I visited with their parents, Chad and Allie! We had a wonderful visit, and afterwards headed back home.

Sunday afternoon, Susan and I ventured into Tulsa and picked up Katie and Kassie from Aunt Julie's house where they spent the night. We had packed all the bikes into the minivan, so we then headed out to Riverside and went on a family bike ride! It was a beautiful day, and we had a wonderful ride. Afterwards we headed over to Brookside and got some cool drinks at Sonic. It was a wonderful way to spend a Sunday afternoon!

On Saturday morning, Susan, Katie, Kassie and I got ready and went into Tulsa to check out the LabRescue's dogs. We haven't fully decided yet, but are interested in pets of our own choosing (versus the strays that seem to wander onto our property), so we thought we'd stop in to see what kinds of dogs are out there to choose from.

After that, the girls went with Grandma Carr to get signed up for the summer reading program. Then Grandma took them to the park where we met them to pick them up. But as it turned out, they wanted to stay the night to spend more time with Chelsea and Malakai... so Susan and I were left to ourselves for the evening!

That worked out kinda well actually as Susan and I were going to attend a wedding that evening... Abbie Harmon was getting married. We are friends with the Harmon family, and Susan was Abbie's teacher in high school at Victory Christian School, and later taught Abbie in college at ORU! Abbie is a teacher herself now, and it was great to see her at her wedding!

This morning Katie and I woke up early and got ready, and went off to the "Spirit of the Warrior II" Karate Tournament in Broken Arrow! Katie had to go up against a lot of kids, and did a very good job. I warmed up a bit with her, then her teacher had her practice a bit, and then we were off and running in the competition. Although she did not place in forms, she did receive a nice participation award. But in the fighting competition - Katie came to definitely take control. Her first match was against a boy with a blue belt (one belt higher than Katie's green belt). Katie was focused, and aggressive, and simply over powered her opponent. That allowed her to fight into the next round for a place and a trophy. Katie fought hard and did a great job - and ended up with a third place trophy! As with all great fights, she and I celebrated afterward at Taco Bell! Some Karate pics are below.

May Birthdays!

The big event of the day actually started in the evening - with the celebration of May birthdays! Today we celebrated Ashlynn's first birthday, as well as birthdays for Susan's dad (Frank), Laura's dad (Dale), and for Veronica! A pic of all the birthday folks is below. We are quite a gathering when we all get together! It was very nice being able to visit and see everyone - and we had a great time. Party pics are below:

For Mothers Day we decided to go on a family bike ride at River Parks! We threw the bikes in the back of the minivan and headed into Tulsa. It was a gorgeous day with blue skies and white puffy clouds - Kassie's personal favorite! We biked about eight miles and then went over and dropped off flowers and Mothers Day cards to Grandma Carr and to Grandma Christ! After that, we took Susan out for a nice dinner - and headed home. I was able to get the lawn mowed just in time for movie night... Katie and Kassie's idea - a movie of Susan's choosing. Hope you all had a wonderful weekend as well!

Congratulations Julie!

Friday night I attended the graduate hooding ceremony at Oklahoma State University where my sister Julie is graduating with her Masters' degree! Julie has some how been able to successfully navigate her teaching career, a family and husband, church and school activities, and arrive finally at the end receiving a Masters degree from OSU. I am very proud of my sister, and want to convey just what an immense accomplishment this is. Julie is not looking to stop there, although hopefully she will take a bit of a break, but is hoping to continue on to get a doctoral degree at some point. Congrats Julie!

Even though we faced the threat of wet weather, Katie, Kassie and I couldn't miss the opening day of the Renassance Fair at The Castle in Muskogee! We drove on down about lunch time and spent the afternoon looking at the sights and sounds of Medieval times. But the rain did come, and many of the activities were somewhat affected... so we had to leave for now. The fair continues the entire month of May, so our hope is to return another weekend, preferably sunny - and hopefully during one that Susan can join us as well.
